Drop deformation, breakup, and coalescence with compatibilizer

چکیده
The effect of copolymers on the breakup and coalescence of polybutadiene ~PB! drops in polydimethylsiloxane ~PDMS! is studied using a four-roll mill flow cell. Copolymers are produced at the interface by a reaction between functionalized homopolymers. They reduce the interfacial tension and thus enhance breakup; they also inhibit coalescence of drops. Under the conditions of our experiments, the latter effect is much more significant than the former. For example, the addition of copolymer sufficient to reduce the interfacial tension by only 3% relative to the bare interface value is found to reduce the critical capillary number Cac for coalescence by a factor of 6. The critical capillary number for coalescence in the absence of copolymer is also measured for the first time. It is found to scale with the drop radius a as Cac;a 20.8260.03 and with the viscosity ratio l as Cac;l . © 2000 American Institute of Physics. @S1070-6631~00!01203-4#

Lattice Boltzmann Simulation of Deformation and Breakup of a Droplet under Gravity Force Using Interparticle Potential Model
Abstract In this paper interparticle potential model of the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) is used to simulate deformation and breakup of a falling droplet under gravity force. First this model is applied to ensure that the surface tension effect is properly implemented in this model. Two tests have been considered. First, it has been checked an initial square drop in a 2D domain can freely def...
متن کاملKinetics of drop breakup during emulsification in turbulent flow
Systematic set of emulsification experiments is performed to elucidate the role of several factors, which control the process of drop breakup during emulsification in turbulent flow. As starting oil-water premixes we use emulsions containing monodisperse oil drops, which are generated by the method of membrane emulsification. By passing these premixes through a narrow-gap homogenizer working in...
متن کاملEffects of compatibilizer on immiscible polymer blends near phase inversion
e consider the effects of adding a PIB-PDMS diblock copolymer as a compatibilizer in model lends composed of polyisobutylene PIB and polydimethylsiloxane PDMS . The ratio of PIB to DMS was varied from 20:80 to 80:20 and, hence, these blends are dubbed “concentrated” blends. ost experiments were conducted on blends containing 0.01 or 0.1 wt. % compatibilizer. All lends had a droplet-matrix morph...
متن کاملDeformation and Breakup of Drops in Axisymmetric Flows and Comparisons with the Taylor Analogy Breakup Model
The Taylor analogy breakup (TAB) model is used for the prediction of drop deformation and drop breakup in spray simulations conducted with CFD codes. This model assumes that a spherical droplet moving in a gas stream behaves like a forced, damped harmonic oscillator in which the forcing term is given by the aerodynamic drag, the damping is due to the liquid viscosity and the restoring force is ...
متن کاملAn Adaptive Mesh Algorithm for EvolvingSurfaces: Simulations of Drop Breakupand Coalescence
An algorithm is presented for the adaptive restructuring of meshes on evolving surfaces. The resolution of the relevant local length scale is maintained everywhere with prescribed accuracy through the minimization of an appropriate mesh energy function by a sequence of local restructuring operations. The resulting discretization depends on the instantaneous configuration of the surface but is i...
